Kosta is Sweden’s oldest glassworks still in use. It is a place with an amazing history. The glassworks was founded in 1742 by two county governors, Anders Koskull and Georg Bogislaus Stael von Holstein. Since the two founders wanted to be remembered, they named their glassworks Kosta, after the first syllable of each respective surname.
For the first 150 years, the glassworks produced only utility glass, such as windowpanes, bottles, glasses and chandeliers. The glassblowers were immi-grants, German masters from Bohemia. They possessed knowledge of the craft that had been carried on from father to son for generations.
The glass at Kosta was designed by the glassblowers until the turn of the last century. The first designer to be employed by Kosta was Gunnar Wennerberg, 1898. Ever since then a large number of artists and designers have enriched the glassmaking tradition of the works with their artistic talents. A tradition that is constantly being developed and refined by artisans and designers.
Today, Kosta Boda is proud to have seven designers tied to production – Anna Ehrner, Göran Wärff, Kjell Engman, Ulrica-Hydman-Vallien, Bertil Vallien, Åsa Jungnelius and Ludvig Löfgren.
Handmade, colourful, artistic glass from the glassworks of Kosta, Boda and Åfors has turned Kosta Boda into one of Sweden’s strongest brands as well as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of glass. Glass from Kosta Boda is sold all over the world.
The way of working at Kosta, Boda and Åfors glassworks is a great example of thriving traditional Swedish craftsmanship.
